Museum-treasure of St.Francis and Perkins collection

The treasure of St. Francis signifies objects, especially for liturgical use, from those people who wanted to demonstrate their devotion for the Saint. The number of these donations dictated the necessity to catalog and to preserve these materials. With this intention, Pope Innocenzo IV, with the Papal Bull of July 16,1253, granted to the Friars of the Sacred Convent to be able to use these given objects. Besides, the aforesaid Bull forbade anyone to remove, to pawn, or to sell the objects, thus, becoming, in a certain sense, the birth of the Treasury of the Basilica.
Many of the objects that composed this treasure have been lost. The fabrics were perishable and the precious objects were stolen.
In 1955, Frederick Mason Perkins gave to the treasury a number of items from the XIV and XVI centuries.
From 1977 this treasury was located in an ancient dormitory of the Sacred Convent. Because of the damage suffered in the earthquakes of 1997, the treasury and collection are not open to the public.
